Bacterial cellulose (BC) is secreted by Acetobacter xylinum. Compared with plant fiber, it possesses an array of unique properties, including high crystallinity, high water content, biocompatibility, high mechanical strength and an ultra-fine fiber network. Bacterial cellulose can be used for making unusually strong paper, because it consists of extremely small clusters of cellulose microbrils, this property greatly upgrades the strength and durability of the paper when it is added to the paper. There are some issues in large-scale application of bacterial cellulose to be solved, such as the high cost, low yield, mechanical stability and so on. |
