Abstract: |
Highly-filled fiber composite materials have very poor water resistance when clay is used as the filler. Attempts were made in this study to improve the water resistance through replacing the type of fillers used and using internal sizing with AKD size. It was found that when the clay filler was replaced with talc or calcium carbonate, the water resistance of the composite material could be greatly enhanced. It was also found that internal addition of AKD could significantly improve the water resistance of the composite materials filling with clay, but the AKD dosage needed was much higher than that used in conventional paper-making process. This difference is believed to be related with the facts of high filler loading, small particle size and high specific surface area of the clay filler used. |
