Abstract:
      TO-MFC was prepared by a combination of TEMPO-mediated oxidation pretreatment and mechanical grinding method, and PR-MFC was prepared by refining using PFI mill. When TO-MFC and PR-MFC were used as the strengthening agent adding to the fiber pulp to make handsheets, the properties of these handsheets and papermaking process were investigated. It was found that drainage time prolonged and the retention of GCC filler increased with adding TO-MFC or PR-MFC. The physical strength of the paper improved, especially the tensile index increased, close to 50% when the dosage of TO-MFC or PR-MFC was 3%. In general, the enhancement effect of TO-MFC was slightly better than PR-MFC. The TO-MFC or PR-MFC could form nano-sized network structure which could strengthen the fiber-fiber bonding and increase the bonded area, as a result, both fibers and nanofibers network contributed to the paper strength in an additive manner.
