Abstract: |
Biobased latex (biolatex) has been used as adhesive in papermaking industry, due to its advantages of low cost and environmental friendly. The biolatex can be the substitute for petrochemical-based latex used in paper and paperboard coatings preparation. The objective of this study was to analyze the physical properties of color ink-jet printing paper in which the biolatex replaced polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) in the coatings used for precoating and topcoating. In this paper, effects of biolatex on the physical properties of color ink-jet printing paper, such as brightness, opacity, PPS roughness, gloss, and ink absorption, IGT surface strength were studied. The results showed that the increase of biolatex substitution ratio resulted in higher paper brightness, opacity, gloss, PPS roughness, and ink absorption; but the paper density, bursting strength and surface strength decreased. It was also found that, the best substitution ratio of biolatex was 60% and 40% in the coatings for precoating and topcoating respectively. |
