Abstract:
The effects of fines removal in corn stalk high yield pulp prepared by environment-friendly hydrothermal treatment on pulp properties and papermaking wet-end chemicals using were studied. The results showed that there were abundant parenchyma cells in the pulp and the content of fines was as high as 62.1%. Pulp dewatering performance and strength properties were affected by the fines removal in pulp. With the increase in fines removal rate, pulp beating degree gradually declined, strength properties increased first and then decreased. When the fines removal rate was 17.8%, pulp strength properties were the highest; however, water retention value and strength properties of the pulp gradually decreased with further fines removal. The fines of corn stalk high yield pulp also had a great impact on the using effect of papermaking wet-end chemicals such as sizing agent AKD, wet strength agent PAE, and oil repellent. Appropriate removal of fines could improve the waterproof performance, wet strength, and oil repellency of paper to varying degrees. Therefore, fines removal is an effective way to improve the performance of corn stalk high yield pulp and expand its use.
