Abstract:
As the increasingly demands for barrier performance and green environmental sustainability of coatings in the packaging industry, using waterborne barrier coatings to give packaging materials high barrier performance has become one of the research hotspots in the industry. This paper reviewed the recent research progress in waterborne barrier coating to improve the oxygen and moisture barrier performance of packaging materials. The bio-based waterborne barrier coatings of polysaccharides and proteins with controllable rheological properties and excellent film-forming properties were introduced. The non-biological based waterborne barrier coatings of polyvinyl alcohol, polyacrylic acid emulsion and polyvinylidene chloride emulsion were also summarized. Waterborne barrier coatings have the advantages of environment, safety and no solvent residue, in line with the green concept of sustainable development. Waterborne barrier coatings have great application potential in barrier packaging materials.
