Alkyl ketene dimer (AKD) was used as an alternative to the conventional acid rosin/gum alum surface sizing system for neutral internal sizing of Xuan paper, in order to improve the durability of sized Xuan paper. Using the Actinidia chinensis planch. juice as the dispersant, the AKD-sized Xuan paper was prepared. This study investigated the interaction between AKD sizing and dispersion of Actinidia chinensis planch. juice, and determined the process sequence of sizing and dispersion. In addition, the intermittent production process of Xuan paper was simulated through batch replenishment pulp experiments, and the stability of AKD-sized Xuan paper in terms of acid-base properties, color, hydrophobic and ink-repellent was comprehensively evaluated in conjunction with wet-heat aging test. The results showed that Actinidia chinensis planch. juice caused AKD flocculation and adsorption on the surface of fibers, and the additive process of AKD sizing first, followed by dispersion of Actinidia chinensis planch. juice, could reduce the adverse effects of AKD on the whiteness and formation of paper. The surface properties of AKD-sized Xuan paper were basically stable during intermittent production, and its hydrophobic and ink-repellent properties and physical properties reached or exceeded those of commercially available sized Xuan. AKD-sized Xuan paper had a higher pH value and alkali reserves than that average value of commercially available sized Xuan by 0.8 and 55.6%, respectively. After wet-heat aging, the pH value and alkali reserve retention rate of AKD-sized Xuan paper were higher than that average value of commercially available sized Xuan by 1.4 and 21.8%, and the yellowing value and color difference value were lower than those of commercially available sized Xuan by 8.2% and 21.8%, respectively, and the physical properties were more stable. |
